This is where Columba (b.521AD) settled after leaving Ireland, and from here Aidan was sent to carry the Gospel through Scotland to Lindisfarne in 635AD.<\/p>\n<p>In the twentieth century the Abbey was restored as a place of pilgrimage and the Iona Community was established by the Church of Scotland minister George MacLeod. It is a dispersed Christian ecumenical community working for peace and social justice, rebuilding of community and renewal of worship.
