At St Sidwell\u2019s, Exeter, he began wearing a surplice while preaching, a Tractarian practice that brought him much criticism. His successor endured mob violence when he adopted it. Following a number of academic appointments, he was appointed Bishop of Ely in 1864. He was later translated to Winchester in 1873 before retiring due to ill health in 1890.
