At the age of 15 he became organist of the Church of St Stephen, Sneinton, in his native Nottinghamshire, and from 1873 was organist at St John\u2019s. In 1880 he was appointed private organist to the Marquess of Bristol at his seat of Horringer, and he also served as Organising Choirmaster to the Church Music Society for the Archdeaconry of Sudbury. He was author of <em>A Concise and Practical Explanation of the Rules of Simple Harmony and Thorough-Bass<\/em> and other works, and his anthems include \u2018O Worship the Lord\u2019 and \u2018Thou crownest the Year\u2019, a piece for harvest.
