The son of a Suffolk surgeon, he was educated at the Grammar School in Bury St Edmunds and Cavendish College and Downing College, Cambridge. He became a deacon in 1888 in Liverpool and was priested the following year. He served churches in Lancashire, Australia, Norwich, Jersey and Gosport, Hampshire, before coming to St John\u2019s.
