His mother, Magdalena Stewart (1806-96), was a native of Guernsey.

Holland also had distinguished relatives in the legal profession: his great-grandfather was Lord Erskine, Lord High Chancellor from 1806-7, and one of his brothers was Sir Thomas Erskine Holland (1835-1926), sometime Chichele Professor of International Law at Oxford.

Following study at Trinity College, Dublin (BA, MA, Divinity Testimonium), Holland was ordained in 1863. After brief curacies in Lincolnshire and Washington he served as a curate at St James’s Church, Bury St Edmunds, from 1865-70. He was then appointed Vicar of St John’s upon the departure of Robert Rashdall, remaining in post for eight years. During his incumbency the Church changed significantly, and when he left St John’s he said he ‘felt it a duty to resign a charge which was overtaxing my strength.’

In moving to Askham in Westmoreland, where he was Vicar for seven years, he exchanged parishes with the Revd Charles Baker. For the last 24 years of his life, 1885-1909, Holland was Vicar of St James, Dudley, exchanging the post with Revd C C Southey, son of the famous poet.

Holland’s private life was tinged with sadness. His first wife Mary Mossop, whom he married in 1865, died 9 years later at the age of 33, and his second wife, Emily Josephine Ray, also predeceased him. His first son with Mary, Arthur Stewart, died at the age of 10 in 1877. He appears to have been planning to marry a third time when he died, aged 70, in 1909. The local paper announced a ‘marriage arranged’ for December 1909 between Holland and Ethel Mary, fourth daughter of a Mrs Cake of Bath. Holland died on 31 August, just five days after this announcement appeared.

Holland had seven children in total. Another son from his first marriage, Lieut Walter Cluny Stewart Holland, a member of the Canadian Infantry, died during the First World War aged 44.
