Drayton Wyatt<\/a> in the 1870s. They are made from English oak and have a variety of attractive carved ends. They replaced the original \u2018box\u2019 pews and benches, the former being available only to those who could afford to rent them. The new pews have always been occupied on a strictly \u2018first come, first served\u2019 basis.<\/p>\n<p>A number of pews have been removed from the church at times since the 1970s, in the nave and the south aisle this has created additional space at the west end of the church. As part of the 1990s mini-reordering of the church, some pews were removed from the back of the nave to allow the font to be brought forward. All the pews have been removed from the north aisle, which is now a flexible open space. Possibly a few were removed earlier, in the time of <a href=\"https:\/\/stjohnsburystedmunds.co.uk\/index.php\/building-history\/church-people\/revd-sydney-john-elias-peach\/\">Fr John Peach<\/a>, to make space for St Michael\u2019s altar.<\/p>\n<p>Among the noteworthy chairs in the church is a Faldstool, a portable chair used only for special occasions, such as a visit by the Bishop. This was gifted to the church by Ann Grieve in memory of her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/stjohnsburystedmunds.co.uk\/index.php\/biographies\/peter-grieve\/\">Peter<\/a>, and it bears a small brass plaque to that effect.
