Some years ago, someone anonymously placed a picture of C.J. Hazell’s war grave behind the statue of St Michael within the church.
Cecil John Hazell (1915-44) was born in Oxfordshire, the son of Reginald Henry and Mary Elizebeth Hazell. A private in the Royal Army Service Corps, he died in Normandy on 11 August 1944, aged 29, and is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery (pictured).
Hazell was an active member and leader of the 4th Bury St Edmunds (St John’s) Scout Group, and is memorialized on the national Scouts Second World War Roll of Honour. He is remembered at St John’s by a statue of St Michael, installed by Fr Ullathorne.
