Annie Bareham (née Boughton) (1903-1991) was christened and confirmed at St John’s and was an active member of the church for more than sixty years. She and her husband were married at the church in 1926 by Canon Adams. She helped to found a number of organizations at the church which brought benefit to the community over many years. These included a Brownie pack, of which she was the first Brown Owl; the King’s Messengers, which offered spiritual teaching to both girls and boys; and the Fellowship of St Monica, which was modelled on the Mothers’ Union but catered for young wives with small children. She was also a member of the Parochial Church Council and an active supporter of the annual fete. In the 1960s she moved to Oxford with her daughter Sylvia, a teacher, who was later in the first wave of women ordained to the priesthood in 1994.
