Canon Roy Southwell (1914-2011) was the first Archdeacon of Northolt, a post he held from 1970 to 1980.
Born in Sudbury on 3 December 1914, he was educated at Sudbury Grammar School and King’s College London – he was awarded the AKC, the Associateship of King’s College, in 1942. Priested in 1943, he served curacies in Wigan and Kennington and held an incumbency at Ixworth before moving to St John’s in 1951. He served as Vicar of the parish until 1956, and during his time the vicarage next to the church was sold and a new one purchased in Well Street. From 1956-9 he was Rector of Bucklesham with Brightwell and Foxhall, and from 1959-68 he was the diocesan Director of Education and an honorary canon of the cathedral. He retired in 1980 but served as Warden of the Community of All Hallows Ditchingham, in Norwich diocese, from 1983-1989.
He died on 23 July 2011. He had married Nancy Sharp and had two daughters.
