Canon Simon Pettitt (1950-2009). After study at Nottingham University and ordination training at Kelham Hall, home of the Society of Sacred Mission, Pettitt was ordained deacon in 1975 and priested the following year.

Following a curacy in Penistone, and two years as diocesan youth officer in Wakefield diocese, he moved to Bury, serving as diocesan schools officer from 1980-86.

Pettitt was Vicar of St John’s from 1986 until his appointment as diocesan communications officer in 1993. He was appointed an honorary canon of the Cathedral the same year. He died, aged 59, in 2009, and a Holy Water Stoup was installed at St John’s in his memory in 2018.
