Edward Alfred Pollard (1861-1926) served St John’s as a sidesman for 12 years and, more latterly, as a churchwarden. In his tribute to Mr Pollard at the dedication of the screen given to the Church in his honour, the Archdeacon of Suffolk, The Ven William T Farmiloe, described him as ‘one of those, who by quiet, simple and unostentatious service, were building up and extending the Kingdom of God.’ Pollard’s funeral was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress and was reported in detail in the Bury Free Press.
