Rt Revd Edward Harold Browne (1811-91) was educated at Eton and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and ordained priest in 1837. At St Sidwell’s, Exeter, he began wearing a surplice while preaching, a Tractarian practice that brought him much criticism. His successor endured mob violence when he adopted it. Following a number of academic appointments, he was appointed Bishop of Ely in 1864. He was later translated to Winchester in 1873 before retiring due to ill health in 1890. He is thought to have been Gladstone’s preferred choice for Canterbury following the death of Archibald Campbell Tait in 1882.
