Thomas Smith (1832-1905) studied piano with Henry Farmer and organ with Charles Noble. At the age of 15 he became organist of the Church of St Stephen, Sneinton, in his native Nottinghamshire, and from 1873 was organist at St John’s. In 1880 he was appointed private organist to the Marquess of Bristol at his seat of Horringer, and he also served as Organising Choirmaster to the Church Music Society for the Archdeaconry of Sudbury. He was author of A Concise and Practical Explanation of the Rules of Simple Harmony and Thorough-Bass and other works, and his anthems include ‘O Worship the Lord’ and ‘Thou crownest the Year’, a piece for harvest. He lived on Angel Hill.
