The lectern was purchased in 1920 as a war memorial for the cost of £70, provided by public subscription. At its unveiling, friends of those who died in the first war processed past it, leaving flowers to mark their loss.

It is from here that the Bible is read during services. Lecterns are often in the form of an eagle with outstretched wings, a symbol of St John the Apostle and Evangelist and of the word of God that flies high in the heavens.
