It is recorded that a prayer desk is inscribed: ‘John Arthur Newson, former assistant priest, who died in Normandy trying to save others’ and dated 1944.
Newson was serving as an army chaplain attached to the 5
th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and died attempting to save others while swimming. This may be a reference to the desk at present before the memorial corner but, if so, the inscription is not visible. Alternatively, the desk itself may have been lost.
