This window shows the visit of the three kings or wise men to the nativity, the birthplace of Jesus. Mary, Joseph and Jesus are shown in the left-hand ‘light’, while the three kings crowd around, holding their gifts. The star that the kings have followed can be seen in the upper left-hand lancet. This story is taken from St Matthew’s Gospel, and is also sometimes described as the ‘Adoration of the Magi’.

The window was designed by C. E. Kempe, one of the most famous, and most prolific, of Victorian stained-glass manufacturers and a close associate of William Morris. The window displays Kempe’s signature emblem, a wheatsheaf. It was installed in memory of Lieut. Col. Arthur John Watson, who died during the Boer war in 1900, by his wife Fairlie (1859-1934).
