Canon David Richard Underwood (b.1947) was priest in charge at St John’s from 1994-1999. He was educated at King’s College London – he was awarded the AKC, the Associateship of King’s College, in 1969 – and undertook ordination training at St Augustine’s College, Canterbury. He was ordained deacon in 1970 and, after a brief curacy at Witham in Essex, he obtained a teaching qualification from St Osyth’s College, Clacton, in 1972. From 1982-91 he was Head Teacher at Great Heath School, Mildenhall, serving also as a non-stipendiary minister in the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich diocese. He was priested in 1992.
In 1998, Fr Underwood became priest-in-charge of St George’s as well as St John’s. In 1999 he was appointed Diocesan Director of Education, in which post he served until 2004. He was made an honorary canon of the Cathedral in 2003.
