At St John’s we affirm the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the doctrine that Christ blesses us by being really and fully present in the sacrament. It is possible to seek to define how this happens with too much rigidity, but we trust in Christ and believe him when he says ‘This is my Body’ and ‘This is my Blood’. For us it is the Blessed Sacrament.
Accordingly, beside the Altar in the Lady Chapel, a white candle burns above the Aumbry, the curtained cupboard set in the wall in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept as a focal point for devotion and so that Holy Communion may be taken to the sick or housebound.
